Times are a changing. It sure seems like the Mac segment has grown a lot recently. But then again, I've been in the art department here at the University of Oregon the last two years. Before that, I hardly ever saw a Mac. The PC users in my department are in the minority, I think. I haven't really needed to have a Mac though. I've always found alternative methods on PC for everything I've needed to do.

Macs certainly are pretty. I can't deny that. But I'm much happier with windows.

Ironically I'm typing this on a Mac. (Not my own, but I'm at work.)

There was a time when I enjoyed tinkering around with computers. I used linux 1.2.13,windows 3.11/dos 5 (this was over 15 years ago). I considered myself a computer 'hobbyist'.

However, these days, I consider computers more as 'tools' rather than a 'hobby'. The hardware has remained relatively the same (using this term very loosely but every computer pretty much has a motherboard, cpu, video, memory, and a hard disk) that building my own rig is no longer appealing to me. Now I see the computer as a 'tool' that I use for everyday tasks. For those everyday tasks, Macs seem to just work right out of the box. I no longer have the desire to tinker around with device drivers and optimization. My tools can live in a walled garden, just as long as they work for the tasks that I use them for.

IMO Apple has a dominant market position. However, every giant can be unseated.

I'm a layman in the literal sense when it comes to using a PC. and as a Layman I understand the appeal and draw of the almighty Mac that people seem to be falling head over heels in love with when it comes to Mac products, even if that appeal is superficial.
Most of us know we can get PC with the same specs as a Mac for a fraction of the price and SOME of know that PC's offer more customization and freedom than Mac's do; However the MAJORITY of people in general don't know how to use 25% of the full functionality of the devices they use in their everyday lives nor do they want to. I've learn that people are too lazy to learn how to use Tech they spend hundreds to thousands of dollars to buy. This is (sadly) where Apple succeeds over Microsoft and other competitors. People of all ages can pick up an Apple product and within 5 minutes know how to it works to some degree. those who are PC illiterate will gravitate to the Mac over PC 9 times out of 10, this plus hardcore Mac users who know how to use a Mac to the fullest potential is why Apple has 90% of the market share. What other companies needed to do was not simply follow Apple's lead, but to do it better than them, to say anything you can we can do better.
Has the Apple taken over completely? Far from it, but if the other tech companies don't put their own techs to work or work out a collaboration that doesn't leave them trying to screw each other at every turn and end up turning out a half assed product, then Apple may end up winning the War.

The majority of my classmates (a good 95%) are complete Mac lovers. This skewed statistic is probably due to the fact that I am in a photography curriculum and many aspiring photographers believe the propaganda that Macs are superior for photo and video editing when a comparable functioning PC will cost you a fraction of the cost. The Mac club is growing increasingly as colleges and universities decide to switch to Macs for their photo and video courses leaving many computer illiterate people unable to adapt what they learned to a PC.

I further believe Macs are ideal for those users who are unable or do not wish to know how their computers work. They want to accept the way their computer is given to them and do not wish to customize it. When they use another computer (at work, at school, at a friend's house) they want to know that it is setup the exact same way as theirs as any deviation would confuse them. They frequently cite the benefits of the Mac support line and truly believe that they are unable to be victims of viruses.

I lean towards the conclusion that there are two types of people; those who know how to make computers work for them effectively and will customize them to do so (PC users) and those who are uncomfortable with computers and need a structured system with colourful bells and whistles that limits customization (and the ability to screw things up)(Mac users).

Exactly. You need a DEEP discount to make me even consider an AD based version.

What I think is even crazier though is they are expecting users to vote on ADs for free via a dedicated app on their PC. Insanity.

I must say the more I see from Bling the more i like the platform. This looks like a map app that is going to be good for the windows mobile platform. Just may give Google maps a run for its money. As we all know from running the Google map application the program is full of bugs, and poor reliability.

the only problem i can see is for Sprint customers who are running tel-nav navigation program making the switch.
